Los Angeles Center Assists in Tree Care in Butterfly Park
On Saturday, February 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., members of the Los Angeles center participated in a community service event at the Gibbs Butterfly Park in Huntington Beach, California. The park serves as a resting ground for migrating monarch butterflies, which are frequently listed on the top-10 endangered species list.

The "Tree Care" activity was organized by the Huntington Beach Tree Society, a nonprofit
organization that planted over 130 trees and 900 plants over a three-year period in order to restore the park. Members of the Los Angeles center joined the Huntington Beach Tree Society and members of the UCI Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, in helping to care for the trees planted in the park. We did various tree-care activities, including widening the circles around the trees, removing weeds, and placing mulch in the areas that were cleared. The members had a great time working
with the trees and in harmony with the other participants.

In addition, we were able to meet with the coordinators of the Huntington Beach Tree Society and tell them about our organization. Also, we met with the vice-president of the service fraternity and discussed our common desire to establish a "community service network" to let each other know about future community service opportunities.

Although heavy rain was forecast for the southern California area, members noticed that the weather cleared up just before the event, and sunny conditions continued until after the event was complete, when the clouds and rain moved in to bring their blessings to our efforts.
